30,000 vehicles not meeting LEZ standards

30 November 2007

Transport for London (TfL) estimates that 30,000 vehicles do not meet London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) requirements for 4 February 2008, when the first phase of the scheme goes live.

Steve Biddle, head of technical services at the Road Haulage Association, says long lead times for new trucks, and the cost of upgrading old ones, mean hauliers may not be able to meet the standards. TfL says operators have several options, including fitting an abatement device, reorganising their fleet, or paying  the daily charge.
