Online shopping boom fuels demand for drivers

06 December 2007

A boom in online shopping this Christmas has led to a "far greater demand" for drivers than last year, says recruitment firm Manpower. Simon Edwards, head of driving at Manpower, says record numbers of drivers - around 5,000 - are needed this winter to deal with the Christmas rush. He adds: "The next two weeks will be especially busy for operators, as traditionally they are the busiest weeks for internet shopping.

Operators must take a flexible approach to hiring, and be ready to react  to peaks and troughs in demand." Manpower says demand for drivers will ease immediately after the Christmas period, but forecasts "significant demand for 2008", which will "continue to add pressure to the existing driver shortage".
