Hauliers warned to be vigilant about metal theft

12 December 2007
An anti-truck-crime group has warned hauliers - particularly those based in Yorkshire - to be on their guard against metal theft. David Ransom, head of Truck Watch, says the crime is a "major, major issue" in the area and has been driven by steel having such a high price on international markets. He adds: "Steel is high on the list of targeted loads and trucks are increasingly being stolen for their value as scrap and recycled materials.

"Many scrap metal firms are located in Yorkshire as a result  of its history of steel production, which makes it an easy target. The situation has been particularly bad in the past 12 to 15 months. "Almost any part of a truck has a recyclable value and trailers, tankers and skips are all at risk. Wheel hubs, side panels and axles, are particularly vulnerable." Huge demand in China and India has pushed up the prices now paid for scrap metal on the international markets.

Ransom adds: "It is a huge issue for the police, perhaps second only to counter terrorism. It's a double whammy for hauliers, as the vehicle and its load can be driven away. It is important both hauliers and drivers remain vigilant." Alexander Peel, from AW Peel (Haulage Contractors), based in Elland, West Yorkshire, says his firm has suffered so many thefts in the past three years he plans to close down the business in the New Year. He adds: "We have lost several tankers in the past few months - the situation is particularly bad in this part of the country."
