Truck alarms handed out free in Cumbria

07 January 2008

Cumbrian police have been giving remote vehicle alarms to truck drivers at truckstops and motorway service areas in an effort to reduce vehicle crime. The initiative, funded by the government through the Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, has resulted in 45 alarms being handed out to regular users of several stopping points in the county.

Claire Stevens, crime prevention officer with Cumbria Constabulary, says the original intention was to lend the alarms at  the overnight parks so different trucks could use them each night.

But she adds: "We soon decided that this wouldn't be practical so we've given them to drivers who regularly use the same stops. I don't see any reason why we shouldn't get funding for more if this is thought to be a success." The alarms emit a 95-decibel siren that can be heard more than 200m away.
