Some French truck drivers 'steer by ear'

14 January 2008

According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, the French police are keeping a particular eye on the country's truck drivers because a lot of them are "steering by ear".

This follows a previous report that truckers had been spotted watching TV while driving on motorways at 56mph. Motorway maintenance workers alleged that the drivers  were "steering by ear" by placing one wheel on the white line and following the noise.

According to Le Figaro, French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau says accidents involving LGVs have reduced but accepts that if these reports are true "something severe" must be done.
