TNT must pay dismissed worker until tribunal date

16 January 2008

Express parcels firm TNT has been forced to continue paying a worker who was dismissed just before Christmas until his case is heard at an employment tribunal later in the year. At an interim hearing, judge Mrs O Harper, chair of the Bristol employment tribunal, said there was a good chance that Dave Reeves was dismissed because of his union activity and his election to the position of shop steward at TNT's Yate, Bristol, depot.

The tribunal ordered a continuation of contract for Reeves,  who trade union Unite claims was targeted by TNT when it became clear he was attempting to become a shop steward. He had been dismissed for allegedly faking shoulder and back injuries.

Union regional organiser Pam Jennings adds: "The interim relief order made by the employment tribunal must be a signal to the company that it is time its industrial relations team improved their practices." Reeves will face an employment tribunal in April where his future will be decided. He is currently not allowed back to work. TNT declined to comment.
