THE Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce (CCC) have written to Chancellor Alistair Darling explaining operators' concerns over another rise in fuel duty. The government plans to increase fuel duty in April by another 2p/lit, which CCC members say is completely unwarranted and could cost the road haulage industry £170m (based on the tax hike adding another £15,000 in costs per vehicle per 100,000 miles).
John Bridge, chief executive of CCC says: "We should all at this time be supporting our UK hauliers. However, the message that is still being sent from the government to our logistics industry is particularly worrying. The ability of hauliers to compete with other European firms is looking increasingly threatened."
