Fitness warning to transport bosses

25 January 2008

Industry fat cats traditionally head up businesses, but a survey by healthcare organisation BUPA reveals that transport managers should also be monitoring their fitness. More than two-thirds (68%) of all senior-level employees in the transport industry were found to have a body mass index above 25, which means an increased risk of high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, diabetes and some cancers.

One in 17 assessed by BUPA admitted to smoking and just over a fifth (22%) said their desk-bound  jobs meant they led a sedentary lifestyle. However, a hard day juggling fleet deliveries with customers' needs does not result in alcohol abuse: just 4% of those surveyed admitted to drinking at a level that could damage health. BUPA doctor Peter Mace says that if managers were to adopt a healthier lifestyle, it would encourage employees to follow suit.
