Tribute to Irlam chairman and founder

25 January 2008

David Irlam, chief executive of James Irlam Logistics, has paid tribute to his father James Kenneth Irlam, who died suddenly on 13 January. Irlam, known as Ken, was the chairman and founder of Irlam Logistics. He was born in Ringway in 1934 and as a young man helped with deliveries at his father's market gardening business.

The firm diversified into selling milk and then carrying salt and water products for ICI. He married Jean, and the couple had five children. Irlam eventually handed  the day-to-day running of the company to his sons. David Irlam says: "He loved his sport - he followed snooker and was a football fan. He used to go and watch both Manchester teams, City and United.

"There was also the local chapel where he played the organ for over 50 years. "He was a committed father and family man and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends in the industry."
