Trumac: Operators want same payload on heavier vans

25 January 2008

The Trumac Group says it is experiencing growing demand for 3.5-tonne vans, as more operators opt to downsize from 7.5-tonners.  "This leaves us with a challenge," says Jarvis MacDonald, managing director of the Westbury-based bodybuilder. "A lot of these companies want to get the same amount of product on-board, which means we need to increase the payload. This isn't easy when you consider that vans are generally getting heavier."

He explains that in the past the challenge was always  to build a 3.5-tonne refrigerated van with a one-tonne payload. However, Trumac has recently smashed this barrier, and is now offering a medium-wheelbase, high-roof Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a 1,190kg payload.

The van will be on its stand at the CV Show. MacDonald believes over-loading of 3.5-tonne vans is a growing problem, and is convinced that VOSA will soon clamp down on it.
