Many trucks on M1 not roadworthy

31 January 2008

A joint venture between Northamptonshire Police, Leicestershire Police and Vosa on the M1 revealed that almost half the trucks passing along the motorway were unroadworthy. Operation Mermaid, which took place on the M1 near Crick on Wednesday 23 January, checked a total of 35 vehicles, of which 17 were found to have defects. Inspector Nigel  Rickaby says: "It's disappointing that road hauliers still allow vehicles to be on the roads in a dangerous condition and we will continue to enforce the legislation to make the roads safer for the communities of Northampton."

Twelve immediate prohibition orders were granted for mechanical defects including defective tyres, defective suspension and a missing light assembly. Four immediate prohibitions were issued for breaking drivers' hours regulations and two delayed prohibitions were handed out for a missing wing and a defective spray suppression. Eight of the vehicles were overweight and two arrests were made one driver was cautioned while the other was wanted in another police force area for a breach of a community order.
