Crane collapse causes port chaos

Tuesday 05 February 2008 12:00

Operations at Southampton Container Terminal (SCT) have been severely disrupted over the past fortnight following the collapse of a quayside gantry crane on to a container ship.

The incident happened on 18 January after high winds damaged the crane and caused the immediate suspension of all quayside activities in the port pending an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive. Although four cranes were back up and running as MT went to press, the port has been swamped by a huge volume of empty export containers.
