Hauliers over-confident about downturn

08 February 2008

Hauliers are over-confident about dealing with an economic downturn, according to research published by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) last week. Only 32% of companies in transport and logistics believe "managing risk" is important, with 51% accepting that skills development is urgent.

The CMI adds that although failed information technology projects are still a real issue for business, only 11% of firms in transport  believe mastering technology is important. Just 27% say innovation is important in the workplace.

Jo Causon, CMI director of marketing and corporate affairs, says: "Questions need to be asked about how UK organisations will be able to manage in the future if they fail to address key operational issues. Rather than simply focusing on 'what should be done today?', the inability to plan properly might lead to questions of a more critical nature: 'what opportunities have I missed?' or worse, 'how did the organisation not see that coming?'.
