Stobart Group has received the official go-ahead to redevelop the Port of Weston at Widnes, Cheshire, into a fully-functioning bulk shipping and coastal feeder port. The company has received a Harbour Revision Order (HRO) from the Department for Transport to undertake the upgrade.
Stobart, which acquired the port as part of its merger with the Westbury Property Fund last year, says the improvements will help it develop a "fully integrated multi-modal logistics operation". Andrew Tinkler, Stobart Group chief executive, says: "The HRO marks an exciting new start for the Port of Weston and the continuation of our stated strategy.
"By returning the Port of Weston to a fully functioning port, we will further enhance our range of cost-effective logistics solutions for our customers, while helping to reduce carbon emissions and the amount of freight transported around the country's road network." The port is close to the railfreight terminal run by group company O'Connor and has links to the West Coast Main Line, as well as the M62 and M56 motorways. Westlink Holdings - a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Stobart Group - will become the statutory port authority.
