P&H Snacksdirect has had the bulk of its 180-strong 7.5-tonne truck fleet retrofitted with Siemens VDO digital tachographs. The Sheffield-based company had previously used the mobile shop exemption in the Drivers' Hours Rules, which allowed the drivers to manually enter their hours in log books. However, changes in the law meant the fleet needed to be equipped with tachographs by the end of 2007. "This was a challenging retrofit program due to the diversity of the vehicles," explains VDO account  manager Simon Martin, "which ranged from 'W'-registered Daf 45s to automatic Isuzu NQRs."
