Foulger in rail freight project

06 March 2008

Foulger Transport and EWS are providing potato supplier Higgins Group with help in its plan to shift freight by rail. Higgins Group has now started moving 300 tonnes of potatoes per week via an EWS train, while Foulger Transport based in Snetterton, Norfolk, is responsible for distributing the goods to growers throughout the region.

Managing director David Higgins says the idea of moving seed potatoes from its base in Elgin, Scotland to Norfolk by rail grew out of the frustration it was  experiencing with road transport.

Higgins says that if the six-week trial proves successful, it will expand the operation next year both in volume and also to other locations, such as Cornwall. Foulger Transport business development manager Graham Mayes adds: "We are delighted to be involved with anything of this nature, particularly to use our rail freight siding on this site."
