Blackminster, Worcs-based Spiers & Hartwell has increased its operation with the acquisition of local haulier CBG Transport. The purchase will add around £2m to the fresh produce specialist's turnover and take its fleet to 45 trucks. Company secretary Rodney Willougby says that CBG had been put up for sale by its owners and operated in a similar sector to Spiers & Hartwell.
He adds: "It's the first acquisition we have made for around 15 or 20 years. We have found in the past that its coverage was similar to ours. With a bit of forward planning we think we can cut a lot of those trips out." Spiers & Hartwell handles fresh produce distribution to wholesale markets and consolidates produce from a number of local growers for supermarket Sainsbury's.
