Mercedes-Benz says the third generation Actros, which goes into production in July, will feature 37 improvements over the current model. However, as revealed in these photographs, the bulk of these changes have clearly taken place beneath the skin. The new Actros will come with the two-pedal PowerShift2 12-speed transmission as standard. We rate this gearbox highly (having driven several hundred km in a PowerShift-equipped Axor), and applaud the decision to include it as part of the package.
However, Mercedes claims it is the first truck maker to offer an automatic transmission as standard in an entire truck range. While this may well be true on a Europe-wide basis, it certainly is not the case in the UK, where the Iveco Stralis has been sold with AS-Tronic as standard for some years. The new Actros is offered with a choice of six power ratings, from 320hp to 476hp in the six-cylinder and from 510hp to 598hp in the V8.
Driver comfort has received much attention, and Mercedes is particularly proud of its new top bunk. This apparently features an "infinitely variable level control system with retaining straps", which ensures that the bed remains horizontal on bumpy roads or when parked on a slope. Access to top and bottom bunks and to the stowage compartments beneath the bed have been improved too.
Safety levels have been stepped-up, particularly in the Top Safety package. This features every safety option in the Daimler Truck portfolio - including Active Brake Assist, Telligent Proximity Control and Lane Assistant. In Germany insurance company Allianz is promising a 10% discount with this truck - supposedly representing an €800 saving per vehicle.
There will be an Economy package too, although initially this will only be offered on the German market. A Voith retarder, adjustable air deflectors and automatic fuel cut-outs will all help to keep running costs to a minimum. According to the press release, "the front end of the new Actros is decidedly dynamic". By this it means the sides of the radiator grille now curve gently "and harmoniously extend to the sun visor". There are also less louvres in the radiator grille. The new Actros will get its first public airing at the IAA Show, Hanover, in September.
