Kent's freight traffic set to soar

19 March 2008

Freight traffic in Kent will double from 3.5 million truck movements in 2005 to 7.1 million by 2030, attendees at a freight summit in Ashford on Tuesday learned. The figures are part of a State of Freight Report conducted by MDS Transmodal on behalf of the Channel Corridor Partnership (CCP) and the Calais Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The findings of the report were handed over to Kent County Council (KCC) at the summit to aid future management of freight in the county.

KCC's cabinet member for highways, Keith Ferrin, says: "On an average day there are some 11,000 lorries using our main roads and over a year that adds up to about four million lorries. KCC has to plan ahead to cope with these increasing volumes of freight traffic, so the report is a valuable contribution." The report said the key issue is a lack of official parking spaces for lorries in Kent and around the Calais area.
