Northumbrian haulage firm Fergusons (Blyth) says it is in the market for Midlands-based acquisitions to strengthen its general haulage operation. Fergusons already has a depot in Plymouth, Devon, but is looking to add a centrally-located business to improve its operational efficiency. It would be the firm's second local purchase after buying rival Waugh Road Services in 2006.
Managing director Alan Ferguson says: "Having got Waugh properly absorbed and merged with our operation, it's now appropriate to look elsewhere." He says the firm will consider any business with a turnover of £1m upwards that is roughly equidistant between the North East and Plymouth.
Ferguson says that as part of the integration of Waugh, it has trimmed its fleet from about 200 trucks down to 150, but has boosted vehicle earnings by 20%. He adds: "We are being a little more selective in the jobs we are doing, so we have increased revenue per vehicle dramatically." The company will also be moving to a new 26-acre headquarters later this year as part of a £10m property investment near Dudley, Tyne & Wear.
