Changing priorities

28 March 2008

What's your main priority at the moment? Maintaining and/or growing profit? Managing cashflow? Meeting your customers' green demands? Focusing on health and safety procedures? Developing new business? Improving the competency of your staff?

Or just bloody well getting the job done?

Chances are that while any or all of the above feature on your monthly or weekly meeting agendas, the latter point still drains the majority of your time and energy. This week we report on many of these  issues: Skills for Logistics has called for a more professional career structure (encompassing continuous professional development) for transport managers the government's position on biofuels and the ensuing impact has been criticised by the transport industry and environmental lobbyists alike and the call for increased focus on health and safety, especially with the introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter Act.

Each manager must make the decision for themselves on where to focus their energies, particularly as we face a tightening of the economy. Address the wrong issue now and you may find yourself caught out in a few months' time: there's no point focusing on meeting your clients' green demands if in three months' time they tell you they're being squeezed by the credit crunch and want you to focus on cost only. Flexibility then must the key if your priorities need to change. Those looking for guidance would do well to register for MT's Fleet Management Conference on 4 June  at Mere Golf & Country Club in Knutsford, Cheshire. Email for more information.
