The Holy Grail of clean power might just be a step nearer: ITM Power and Roush Technologies have agreed to work together to develop hydrogen-powered engines and refuelling rigs. Roush will be responsible for both adapting existing internal combustion-engined vehicles and researching the development of new power units to run on hydrogen. ITM will provide the refuelling rig, currently in the final stage of development.
The rig - a patented electrolyser due to go into production later this year - can produce hydrogen from water or electricity. An overnight trickle charge will provide the one gallon equivalent of hydrogen at 75bar pressure, giving vehicles a 40- to 60-mile range before the next charge. In the short-term, the joint venture will focus on retrofits. Costs are still unclear at this stage and no particular manufacturer is yet attached to the project.
