Foreign drivers under the TV spotlight

Thursday 03 April 2008 12:00

The safety of foreign trucks on UK roads came under the spotlight earlier this week when ITV ran a programme entitled Killer Lorries: Tonight. While the programme offered little by way of new information, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA)have issued very different responses to the subject.

The RHA believes that European Union countries should have the power to ban foreign operators that commit serious offences in the same way that they can ban domestic hauliers and drivers. However, the FTA suggests Vosa should publish a list of foreign operators that frequently break the regulations in the UK to 'name and shame' them, so UK companies hiring foreign operators know the extent of their compliance or lack of it.
