Most van drivers ignorant of speed limits

07 April 2008

A massive 85% of drivers do not know the correct speed limits when driving a van, while 36% have confessed to breaking the speed limit on dual carriageways. According to a survey by Vauxhall, the majority of drivers believe that vans of all sizes adhere to the same limits as both cars and car-derived vans - but these only apply to light CVs up to 2,000kg GVW.

Furthermore 72% of those questioned were incorrect in their knowledge of  the correct speed on single carriageways (currently 50mph for larger vans) half of those getting it wrong thought the limit was 40mph while the remainder believed it to be 60mph. Dual carriageways saw 28% respondents incorrectly give the limit as 50mph instead of 60mph, while 24% assumed it was the same as for a car at 70mph. Motorway driving had 56% mistakenly believing the limit was at the slower speed of 60mph.
