Safety training can lead to savings

07 April 2008

UK businesses are losing more than £7bn a year because of needless accidents in the workplace, says the British Safety Council (BSC). It adds that more than half of employers don't offer any safety training at all, even though it can often lead to a massive reduction in payouts and costs. Haulage was among the industries examined in the survey, which says that in addition to the financial losses, one worker a day is killed and one  injured every minute.

But BSC chief executive Brian Nimick says the situation is not entirely the fault of management: "Businesses, particularly those of a small or medium size, are overwhelmed by mountains of confusing red tape. They need clear and simple guidelines so measures such as training for health and safety are seen as a asset, not a burden."
