Public-sector showcase for low-carbon vehicles

08 April 2008

Vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are being encouraged to showcase their low-carbon technologies in public-sector fleets following the government's announcement of up to £50m of funding.

The Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement (LCVP) programme is focusing on the development of lower-carbon vans in the first phase public sector partners that have signed up to trial the vehicles include the Environment Agency, Transport  for London and Royal Mail.

The government recognises that a narrow range of vehicles are brought to market due to limited demand from consumers. Also, product development is high-risk and costs can rise substantially, with uncertain prospects on return. It is hoped that by giving manufacturers the opportunity to demonstrate their models in high-profile fleets, the LCVP programme will promote the introduction of new technology at a small-fleet level.

Department for Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick says: "Encouraging the development of lower-carbon vehicle technologies is a key part of our strategy for reducing emissions from road transport. The size of the public-sector fleet means that public-sector demand for lower-carbon vehicles has the potential to have a real impact on the vehicle market."
