A council refuse truck driver in Scotland ran over and killed a colleague despite having the correct cameras and reversing mirrors in his cab, a court heard. David Cassidy, working for East Dunbartonshire Council, admitted driving without due care and attention before Glasgow Sheriff Court. He was fined £500 and given eight penalty points. The court heard that Cassidy's colleague, Stephen Welsh, had crossed behind the truck just as Cassidy began to reverse.
Cassidy was not aware he had run over his colleague until he saw him emerging from under the wheels at the front. An ambulance was called but Welsh died in hospital from his injuries. Cassidy admitted that he did not have a sufficient view to the rear and that he should have taken further measures to ensure it was safe to reverse. In mitigation for Cassidy, it was said that Welsh had been a friend and that he was deeply affected by the accident. Passing sentence, Sheriff Margaret Liddell said: "This was a tragedy for everyone concerned."
