Freight Best Practice launches drivers' handbook

22 April 2008

Freight Best Practice (FBP) has launched a handbook for drivers to encourage them to drive in a fuel-efficient manner. The Fuel Efficient Truck Drivers' Handbook is just one part of FBP's aim to cut operators' fuel use and overall carbon footprint. Richard Elviss, FBP programme manager, says the guide sits alongside four case studies which show that switching off a truck engine when stationary for long periods can save up to two litres of fuel  an hour.

"It is easier to boost your company's bottom line by saving fuel with simple things like turning the engine off when you're not moving than to add that same amount by improving turnover," Elviss says. He adds it is an enormous challenge to get the message across to drivers because everyone responds to different approaches.

"For some a DVD will be just what they need while for others a handbook will help them understand the issue. It really is a case of working with operators to ensure their drivers understand the issue and providing lots of different ways of getting the message over. For some drivers, league tables will work, while for others appointing a fuel champion or bonus schemes for fuel-efficient driving is the answer." The handbook is available free of charge by calling 0845 8770877.

The Department for Transport is launching a nine-month trial of an online benchmarking tool to allow operators  to compare their key performance indicators such as fuel consumption and safety against operators of a similar size running the same type of vehicle. The tool is designed to show operators areas they can improve by highlighting the efficiencies of other hauliers.
