Around 100 trucks attended this morning’s Park Lane protest against the rate of duty on diesel.
Two convoys, one from Kent and another from Lincolnshire, converged on Marble Arch calling for government help to cope with the soaring cost of diesel.
A coffin lamenting the bankruptcy of many small hauliers was carried on to Westminster on a truck belonging to Joe Cook of Moulton Chapel, Lincolnshire.
“We’re looking for the government to take RHA advice and describe haulers
as essential users and give a tax rebate,” says spokeswoman Sarah Knight. “My parents are on the line for the survival of our family business, Les Knight Transport".
Co-organiser Mike Presneill adds: “We’ll be handing in a letter of protest to Derek Wyatt, MP for Sittingbourne, at the Houses of Parliament. We want to put the Burns enquiry back under the Treasury’s nose.”
Trucks from as far afield as Cornwall and South Wales attended the protest.
