The two-day strike at the Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland appears to have had a minimal impact on the road transport sector, however concerns remain over whether further strikes will take place. Around 1,200 workers, took part in industrial action on 27 and 28 April, in protest over the closing of the company's final salary pension scheme.
Gavin Scott, FTA's policy chief for Scotland, says: "There was a degree of panic last week but due to prior warning it's been handled well and as far as I'm aware our industry hasn't been affected too much. "We were lucky this time but if they strike again it will be a major concern," he adds.
As MT went to press, a representative for trade union Unite wouldn't be drawn either way on whether another strike was likely, but said "the dispute still exists". However, site owner Ineos says it wanted to encourage Unite to come back to the table so they could "resolve the matter as quickly as possible".
