The number of trucks on the road goes down

The number of lorries travelling on the UK's roads had dropped by 30,000 since 1990. According to a report by IAM there were 480,000 trucks running in the UK in 1990, but that figure has now fallen to 450,000.

Most of this heavy traffic is on the motorways, accounting for 12.1bn km HGV traffic on major roads in towns and cities has fallen from 4.1bn km in 1990 to 3bn km in 2006. However the report expects that the number of lorries on  the roads will increase in the future - up 50-100% on the 1990 figure by 2025.
