TransAction: more support, more protests

07 May 2008

TransAction 2007 has set a date for another Park Lane protest: Tuesday 27 May. Following a surprisingly well-attended protest last week (MT 1 May), TransAction is keen to maintain the momentum it has gathered in the past month. TransAction founder Mike Presneill has asked the Transport Association to back the protest: "We feel that with Transport Association input, the message would really be rammed home."

The Transport Association was debating whether to support the protest as MT went  to press. Presneill has been an outspoken critic of the RHA and its chief executive Roger King, however the latter's speech at last week's protest has led to some closure. "Roger King delivered a message that was both positive and inspiring. I've given Roger plenty of stick, but he deserves a 'thank you'," Presneill adds.

TransAction has set up an e-petition on the Downing Street website, calling for the withdrawal of the planned 2p/litre duty hike set for October, the decoupling of truck and car taxation, and the introduction of an essential user rebate. The closing date is 28 August. n MT would like to make it clear that last week's interview with RHA chief executive Roger King was conducted a week before the Park Lane protest and his comments should be viewed in that light.
