Menzies Distribution, the transport arm of newsagent John Menzies, is aggressively pursuing cuts to its CO² emissions and has become the first newspaper distributor to operate a Modec electric vehicle.
The 5.5-tonne vehicle is being trialled by one of its central London depots if it proves successful, more could join its 500-strong fleet in the UK and Ireland. Stuart Maclean, logistics manager at Menzies Distribution, says: "We want to be at the forefront of learning about this new technology and the Modec allows us to experiment with operating an electric vehicle in the heart of central London."
The arrival of the Modec is part of a wider initiative to cut Menzies' carbon footprint earlier this year it took delivery of 10 Mercedes-Benz Sprinters equipped with Eco-Start, which automatically cuts the engine when the vehicle is stationary for more than two seconds.
