Stobart airport plans approved by council

09 May 2008

Stobart Group is set to remain in Carlisle after the city council gave it the go-ahead to revamp the local airport. The haulage giant had threatened to pull out of Cumbria and shift operations to its other major base in Widnes if the council did not approve the scheme.

Carlisle City Council's development control committee backed the £35m plans at its meeting on 25 April. The approval, which is subject to more than 50 conditions, will now be referred to the government office for the north  west. The plans include the construction of a replacement runway, a new passenger terminal and a new air traffic control centre.
