Sainsbury's says its new district distribution centre at Selby, North Yorkshire, could create 500 jobs when fully operational. The supermarket's 24-hour, 550,000ft² facility, which will be operated by Wincanton on a five-year contract, is due to open in the summer. The supermarket believes the move will improve stock supply to stores across the area.
Previously, Sainsbury's used facilities at Maltby, South Yorkshire, and Skelton in Teesside, which are now earmarked for closure. Wincanton is talking to customers about potential use for the two sites and looking to redeploy the 300 staff there. The Selby facility was originally operated by DHL Exel and supplied stock to supermarket chain Somerfield. It closed last year, with the loss of 950 jobs after the retailer relocated to another part of the country.
