Profitable Gregory defies ‘relentless’ competition

14 May 2008

Devon-based haulage firm Gregory Distribution saw pre-tax profit rise to more than £3m in 2007, up 58.6% on the year before. Gregory's latest figures reveal a pre-tax profit of £3.3m in the year to 30 September 2007 compared with just over £2m in the previous year. Turnover rose from £73.6m to £78.7m. The increase was achieved despite what the company describes as "relentless" competition.

As it does for most other hauliers, Gregory's directors add that the price of fuel remains a problem. The  directors' report says: "The upward trend in the price of diesel, made worse by the government increase in duty, continues to be one of the principal risks facing the company." Gregory intends to continue its policy of operating in a wide range of market sectors, including food manufacturing, waste recycling and grocery distribution. Gregory Distribution operates more than 400 vehicles and employs more than 1,000 staff.
