Bogus LGV licences could cause ‘carnage’

20 May 2008

Fake LGV licences are being sold on the internet as a £250 'novelty', according to a BBC TV investigation. Lorry drivers in Kent hinted at the availability of the forgeries, complete with a hologram, photograph and room for the buyer to insert personal details such as date of birth and signature.

There is concern that by using a counterfeit licence, unqualified drivers may be able to get a job driving a LGV. Mike Rudd, operations director at haulier Seymour Transport, in Maidstone, told  the BBC: "There are unlicensed drivers with 44 tonnes of truck behind them potentially causing carnage."

The DVLA said those using fake licences were at risk of a possible 10-year prison sentence. The details of the website have been passed to the police.
