The FTA in Scotland is calling for an increase to the speed limit for trucks on the A9, as it would bring about "major enhancements to road safety". The organisation believes the current limit of 40mph for LGVs on the arterial road between Inverness and Perth is outdated, and that the figure should be raised to 50mph.
Gavin Scott, FTA head of policy in Scotland, says: "We are convinced that reducing the speed differential between trucks and other road users - in this case to 10mph - would result in major enhancements to road safety on the A9.
"It would reduce driver frustration and cut fuel consumption bills for hauliers, therefore bringing about associated environmental benefits." He adds that current speed limits were set before the introduction of air brakes, power steering, radial tyres and other improvements to trucks that have taken place over the past 30 to 40 years.
