A moveable barrier designed to improve journey times during Operation Stack is being installed on the M20. The barrier - between junctions 11 and 12 - will create a contraflow on the London-bound carriageway during Stack, while trucks await access to Dover on the coast-bound carriageway. The project, due to be completed by the end of August, should avoid the need to divert motorists onto the A20.
The FTA says the barrier is a step in the right direction, but adds, "what we really need is an overnight lorry park in Kent". Minister for roads, Tom Harris, says: "The barrier will help ease disruption while the Highways Agency continues to work with Kent County Council, the police and other partners to help find a longer-term solution."
