VOSA 'needs to up its game', says Villiers

18 June 2008

Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers has launched a stinging attack on VOSA, describing the agency as "troubled" and claiming that it does not deliver value for money. Speaking at an event to celebrate Scania dealer Keltruck's 25th anniversary, Villiers said that if the Tories win at the next general election, they would ensure foreign trucks are checked "more aggressively and effectively".

She adds: "I think we need to ensure it's a higher priority for the police and I think VOSA  needs to up its game: it is a troubled organisation and needs to operate more efficiently." Villiers also promised that a Conservative administration would introduce a way to charge foreign trucks for using UK roads "as a priority".

However, she again played down the likelihood of fuel duty cuts under the Tories: "We would be foolish to make commitments to tax reductions now when we don't know the state of the books." VOSA declined to comment.
