A driver who stole an HGV licence and used it to gain work in the UK and the Netherlands is being held up as an example to hauliers as to why they should check applicants' details carefully.
The 37-year-old man is due to be sentenced at Hull Crown Court this week after pleading guilty to 15 offences involving the theft of the licence and fraudulent use of it. Humberside Police pointed out that the licence he used did not bear his name, but his employers failed to check his documents.
Health and safety legislation requires hauliers to check documents provided by potential employees to ensure they are legitimate. A police spokesman says operators should request additional forms of ID to confirm that drivers are who they say they are.
