Fears over Forth Road Bridge are lessened

30 June 2008

The Forth Estuary Transport Authority claims the main suspension cables on the Forth Road Bridge are deteriorating more slowly than previously feared.

An internal inspection in 2004 revealed that the cables had lost about 8% of their strength and any further deterioration could result in a truck ban being introduced between 2014 and 2020.

However, following an inspection carried out earlier this year, which revealed that the  cables have now lost about 10% of their strength, the earliest date predicted for any ban is now 2017. A third inspection is due to be carried out in 2011 or 2012.
