Trial to limit trucks to 20mph through village

17 July 2008

Trucks may have to drive through a Leicestershire village at 20mph if the county council gets the go-ahead from the Department for Transport (DfT) to test the scheme. The B4114 runs through the village of Sharnford, and Leicestershire County Council is seeking DfT permission to limit trucks to 20mph through the village, while all other traffic would stick to the current limit of 30mph.

The road is currently used as a shortcut between the  M1 and the A5, or as an alternative when the M69 is congested. If given the go-ahead to run a trial, electric signs which can spot trucks will be installed and will flash the appropriate speed at HGVs. David Parsons, leader of the county council, says : "We are always keen to innovate and hope we are given the green light to pioneer a speed trial in Sharnford."
