'Bridge may collapse' due to law-breaking drivers

05 August 2008

Trucks have been ignoring weight restrictions and damaging weak bridges, according to Suffolk County Council (SCC).

The council cites data from its trading standards department which shows that more than 80 lorries above the three-tonne weight limit have been seen crossing a weak bridge in Kentford near Newmarket.

A council spokesman says he believes the problem has been exacerbated by truck drivers following sat-nav and ignoring the road signs.

Not only are these drivers  breaking the law, they cause damage to the bridge and there is a risk it may collapse, claims councillor Guy McGregor, SCC portfolio holder for roads and transport.
