Wincanton invests £5m in WEEE recycling

05 August 2008

Wincanton is doubling its waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) recycling capability by investing more than £5m in a second UK site. The company has begun building offices and warehousing at a location in Daventry, Northamptonshire, to complement its existing WEEE treatment and fridge recycling plant at Billingham, Teesside, which opened in March 2006 at a cost of £4.5m.

Wincanton is due to start work on the new WEEE machine at Daventry - developed and manufactured by German  engineers, MeWa - in October. It will be capable of treating up to 100,000 tonnes of WEEE per year.

It is expected that sortation operations at the site will begin in December, with the recycling function due to become fully operational early in 2009. Euan Jackson, managing director for recycling at Wincanton, says: "This second site will offer an extended service to help those affected by the legislation to manage their environmental responsibilities."
