Good news for parking offenders in Westminster

19 August 2008

Westminster City Council says motorists who occasionally park illegally will no longer get visits from debt collectors as a result.

From September, parking teams at the authority will instead focus on making sure fines are paid before they reach the enforcement stage.

The decision follows a successful 18-month trial which saw a 40% reduction in the number of tickets sent to bailiffs.

However, the council adds that  those who repeatedly flout parking and traffic regulations and refuse to pay their fines may still be subject to enforcement by a bailiff.

Danny Chalkley, cabinet member for environment and transport at Westminster Council, says: "No one wants a visit by the debt collector and these new rules will ensure the only doors officers knock on are of the most hardcore motoring offenders who repeatedly flout the law."
