FTA urges drivers to be more security-conscious

28 August 2008

The theft of two high-value loads has prompted the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to make an appeal to drivers to be far more security-conscious. Geoff Dossetter, external affairs director at the FTA, says: "Drivers should exercise good judgement and adopt these security measures not only to protect the security of their load, but also to ensure their own personal safety."

The call comes after a red Scania tractor unit and its red trailer were stolen from the Europa Worldwide Logistics depot in Coatbridge, Scotland at 11pm on 15 August. The HGV contained approximately 3,000 cases of whisky worth an estimated £250,000.

The tractor unit and the empty curtainsider trailer were discovered, a day later, parked in a lay-by on the A8 between Langbank and Port Glasgow. Directors at Boyle would not comment on the circumstances surrounding the theft of the lorry-load of whisky.

Police in Cambridgeshire are investigating the theft of 19 pallets of electrical tools from a DAF HGV, which was parked overnight in a lane off the access road from the Shell Travellers' Rest at Hemingford Abbots, off the A14. CM understands that the driver was asleep in the cab of the vehicle while the theft took place and the value of the tools was approximately £150,000.
