Freight moved by UK-registered hauliers across the nation increased by 4% to 161bn tonne-kilometres in 2007.
According to the Department for Transport's Road Freight Statistics 2007, 73% of the total amount was moved by articulated lorry.
Just over half of all goods were moved less than 50km in 2007.
