A clampdown on defective and overweight commercial vehicles has taken place in Wales. During Operation Serpent, which took place on 12 and 20 August in Monmouthshire, VOSA officers checked 17 vehicles and issued five immediate prohibitions for infringements such as drivers' hours irregularities, a diesel leak, and other vehicle defects.
Officers from Gwent Police roads policing unit also carried out stop checks for trucks potentially in breach of the legal weight restrictions on the A472 from the A449 through Usk to its junction with the A4042 at Little Mill.
Over the two days, 73 vehicles were stopped and five fixed penalty notices were issued for driving in a weight-restricted area. Two verbal warnings were also issued for the same offence.
Several vehicles were turned back and prevented from driving through Usk. A spokesman for Gwent Police says: "There will be continued operations and focused daily roads policing patrols in the area providing further education and enforcement."
