Europe pushes for prioritised rail freight

Tuesday 09 September 2008 12:00

MEPs have called on the European Commission to make rail freight a priority and reduce Europe's need for road transport. A motion put forward in the European Parliament - backed by a majority of MEPs - says the commission should concentrate funds on upgrading rail infrastructure, as well as expanding inter-modal hubs and other freight transport modes.

It also calls on member states to give priority to developing higher and further education in logistics and freight transport. "To improve the transport system, the house advocates standardising and simplifying the administration of freight transport market authorities and simplifying customs rules at borders," it says.
